Klondike Derby & Ski Events

By Mr. Kort

Two scouting events made the most of the January 20 snow storm.

On Saturday January 21st, 11 scouts and 4 leaders challenged the annual Klondike Derby. This year it was held at camp Tomo-Chi-Chi Knolls near Huntley. This well-run event was a joint effort organized by the Signal Hill and Northwoods districts. Those sleds we lashed together at the past couple of meetings were put to good use and pulled around to 10 event stations by 2 patrols, the Eagles and the Scarecrows. Each station featured a different first aid or other scouting skill challenge. The patrols were awarded points on how well they completed each event. For many events, the patrols had to work as a team to complete the challenge. There was a lunch break in the middle, where we cooked hot dogs and soup. After the event course “The Great Sled Race” was held. The Scarecrows did very well, placing 1st in 2 of the events (ravine crossing and fastest fire) and 2nd overall in the sled race. The Eagles received high marks for planning as a team and being prepared at many of the stations. We all enjoyed perfect Klondike weather – a nice sunny not-too-cold day, with no wind and plenty of fresh powdery snow.

On Sunday January 22, 4 scouts and their families went skiing at the 1st of 3 Sunday ski events at Wilmot. I don’t know about the other 3 families, my son and I “closed” the ski hill, completing our final run at 10:58 PM. Good thing there was no school on the 23rd. There was plenty of snow and with temperatures holding in the 20’s, it was not very icy or too cold. This is a great opportunity for anyone who wants to get out and ski this season. We get a group rate ($17 for lift tickets + $10 for ski rentals if you need them). There are 2 more ski Sundays, (1/29 and 2/5). The group meets inside by the ski school area at 3 PM, get our lift tickets and rentals, and get to ski as late as we want up until 11:00 PM. All that, and Wilmot is only about an hour’s drive from here.

Many thanks to Mr. & Mrs. Haas for organizing these ski outings for the troop and families.

Help Wanted

By Mrs. Samata & Mrs. Kort

Mr. Haas has been our scoutmaster for quite some time. It would be much appreciated if anyone (male or female) would like to take the position of Scoutmaster. The troop pays for the training at council and for the registration. Also, since Mr. Haas still has a son in the troop, I am sure he will still be available to help out.

Our troop will be holding elections in Feb/Mar for the Boy Troop Leader positions of Patrol Leader, Assistant Patrol Leader, and Quartermaster. Each boy must hold a troop leader position in order to meet advancement requirements.

We will need 3-4 Patrol Leaders. Patrol Leaders are responsible for their patrol. This may involve making phone calls to remind their patrol of things.

We will also need 3-4 Assistant Patrol Leaders. Asst Patrol Leaders help the Patrol Leader and when the Patrol Leader is not present, he takes over the responsibilities of Patrol Leaders.

The troop will need 1 Quartermaster. The Quartermaster is a scout and the Equipment Coordinator is an adult, usually his parent. They maintain and inventory the troop's equipment.

All positions will last 6 months to one year depending on how often we hold elections. In addition, all positions must attend PLC meetings to plan and organize troop activities and outings. If no one volunteers to fill each of the positions, someone will be assigned.

If you have any questions about any of the position or are interested in volunteering to be the first Quartermaster / Equipment Coordinator team, please contact me.

Fund Raisers

For the time being, the Troop 36 committee has decided that wreath sales and car washes will be our fundraisers. We will be scheduling our next car wash at Wal Mart in June.

Our Wreath Sales went well. Although I am sorry to report that some boys did not sell any wreaths. When the time comes around again, we will make this a more visible fundraiser to the parents and the boys.

As for the results, we sold a total of $2,668 worth. This netted out to a total profit of $849.40 - $339.75 of this went to the troop, the rest to the boy’s accounts. Our top 3 wreath sellers were:

Nick K. - $635

Timmy H. - $516

Mike H. - $428.

Great job guys!!

Wal-Mart did come through with the matching funds for our summer Car Wash – We received an extra $414.00!!!

Scout Sunday

A reminder that Feb.5th is Scout Sunday & Feb.11th is Scout Sabbath. On the 8th, Scouting celebrates its 95th birthday. Show your commitment to Scouting and the 12th point of the Scout law by wearing your uniform to your house of faith.
